Different types of building materials conduct
energy differently. Metals like copper and steel, for instance, have a high
conductivity and can transfer heat energy very effectively. On the other hand,
stiff foam and fibreglass batts have low conductivity. When less-conductive
materials are sandwiched between more conductive ones in an assembly like a
wall or roof, the less-conductive materials act as insulators. Insulating
materials significantly slow down the movement of heat through a group of
materials. For conductivity, wood falls somewhere in the middle. It’s not a
good insulator unless it is shredded and has lots of air gaps between the wood
